Wimbledon...

Wimbledon
also called as The Championships, Wimbledon, is the oldest and
most prestigious event in the world of tennis. Wimbledon is held every year in
London, United Kingdom, in the month of June and July. It is the third Grand Slam
event played every year. Before Wimbledon there are the Australian Open and the French
Open tournaments. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event played on grass. The tournament is scheduled for about two weeks and the duration may extend due to rains.

The events held during the tournament are Gentlemen's Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Events for the youth include Boys' Singles, Boys' Doubles, Girls' Singles and Girls' Doubles. All these events are held simultaneously at the same venue. There are some special events included in the tournament like 35 and above Gentlemen's Doubles, 35 and above Ladies' Doubles, 45 and above Gentlemen's Doubles and wheel chair doubles.

A Brief Past...

Wimbledon tournaments were first held in 1877 at Worple Road, Wimbledon; under the control of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. At that time there was only one single event of Gentlemen's Singles held, then in 1884 Ladies' Singles and Gentlemen's Doubles were included by the All England Club. Later in 1913 the events of Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles were also included.
In 1922, the venue was shifted from its Worple road ground to the present one at the Church Road ground.
At first, only top-ranked players contested the tournament, but the situation changed in 1968 with the introduction of open-era in tennis.

About Wimbledon...

In all there are 14 events held during the tournament as mentioned above. Except the Gentlemen's Singles and Gentlemen's Doubles, which are best-of-five events, all other events are best-of-three events.

Almost all events are single elimination events, where, if a player loses a single match gets eliminated from the tournament. Only the the 35 and above Gentlemen's Doubles and the 35 and above Ladies' Doubles are round-robin events.

Every year the tournament is scheduled such as to begin on a Monday during June 20 to 26. The tournament lasts for two weeks, with the middle Sunday being a rest day, when no matches are played. The matches are rescheduled due to rains on the third Sunday, called 'People's Sunday', when seating is unreserved and the tickets are inexpensive and readily available.
